Sports Medicine Updates for the Primary Care Office

This program will consist of four sessions, including updates in concussion, sports participation physicals, and management of lower and upper extremity injuries. The target audience includes providers in the rural tri-state area of Tennessee, Kentucky and Virginia.

Target Audience

Physicians, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners. 

Learning Objectives

  1. Understand how to perform an efficient and evidence-based sports pre-participation physical examination for pediatric and adult populations.
  2. Evaluate sports concussions in the primary care setting with resources to practice evidence-based medicine.
  3. Assess upper and lower extremities injuries in the primary care clinic.

Anne Marie Zeller, DO | Topics: Updates in Sports Pre-Participation Examinations (PPE) for the Primary Care Setting and Concussion Update for the Primary Care Office

Anne Marie C. Zeller, DO, MSc, CAQSM is currently an associate professor of family medicine and osteopathic medicine at Lincoln Memorial University-DeBusk College of Osteopathic Medicine. She is a graduate of the Des Moines University College of Osteopathic Medicine where she also completed a predoctoral fellowship in osteopathic manual medicine. She completed a residency in osteopathic family medicine at University Hospitals in Cleveland, Ohio, and integrative medicine at the University of Arizona. Dr. Zeller also completed a fellowship in primary care sports medicine at University Hospitals Regional Hospitals and Rainbow Babies & Children's Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio. She has served as team physician for several large events, professional, collegiate, high school, and youth teams in  Cleveland, Chicago and Pittsburgh. Most recently, she is one of the team physicians for Lincoln Memorial University Athletics. Her research and clinical interests include the effects of early youth sports specialization, medical education, transgender athletes, percutaneous tenotomy, and regenerative medicine. She is board-certified in family medicine and sports medicine.

Gina DeFranco, DO | in-person presenter | Topic: Update in Management of Upper Extremity Conditions for the Primary Care Provider

Dr. Gina DeFranco is currently associate professor and chair of family medicine at LMU-DCOM, where she has been a member of the faculty since 2009. She focuses primarily in directing the clinical skills courses for the first- and second-year medical students, while also managing the adjunct faculty program for on-campus activities. She leads the team of faculty and staff that is continuing to develop the LMU-DCOM curriculum for preceptor education. In her outpatient practice, which closed in 2019, she focused on women’s health and metabolic conditions.

Christopher Loyke, DO, FACOFP | Topic: Updates in Management of Lower Extremity Conditions for the Primary Care Provider

Dr. Christopher Loyke currently serves as dean and chief academic officer at LMU-DCOM, where he also serves as a professor of family medicine. He first joined the LMU-DCOM administration in 2018 as assistant dean of clinical medicine, then serving as associate dean of clinical affairs before being named dean in 2021. Prior to entering academic medicine, Dr. Loyke was a family physician in Ohio for 27 years. In 2014 he became chief medical officer and director of medical education at University Hospitals Parma Medical Center in Parma, Ohio. Dr. Loyke is also a Colonel in the United States Army Reserve Medical Corps, where he provides primary care services and injury mitigation to soldiers, families and others as required. He received his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine in Athens, Ohio.

This live, in-person program will take place at the LMU-DCOM building on the LMU main campus in Harrogate, Tennessee, on Saturday, February 11, 2023, from 8 a.m. - noon. Registration and a light breakfast will be available beginning at 7 a.m.
