Chronic Non-malignant Pain Management Best Practice per Tennessee Guidelines and Federal REMs: an Interprofessional Perspective

Background

Public Chapter 430 of the State of Tennessee and the Tennessee Clinical Practice Guidelines for Outpatient Management of Chronic non-Malignant Pain defines appropriate measures and requirements for all practitioners who prescribe controlled substances to complete two hours of continuing education relevant to controlled drug prescribing. 

Additionally, in July 2012, the FDA approved a risk evaluation and mitigation strategy (REMS) for extended-release (ER) and long-acting (LA opioid medication. The REMS is part of a multi-agency Federal effort to address the growing problem of prescription drug abuse and misuse.

This two-hour, interprofessional panel, educational activity combines the Tennessee guidelines and REMS goals to increase understanding of appropriate patient assessment and prescribing practices among Tennessee and other health care professionals to help reduce misuse, abuse, and overdose deaths associated with ER/LA opioid analgesics.

Course Instructions

Participants will need to complete the post-test (70% pass rate) and program evaluation to receive CME credit. Once the requirements are successfully completed, a certificate can be downloaded. The program can be completed at participant's convenience.

A Certificate of Completion is provided after the completion of required activities (post-test and evaluation) for health care professionals who want to self-claim Continuing Education (CE) credit.

AOA and AMA PRA CME for this activity will automatically be submitted to the appropriate accrediting body.

The online course will include an Outcomes Measure assessment immediately after the activity and as an optional 90-day assessment.

Learning Objectives

At the end of the presentation, participants will be able to:
 
  1. Identify key principles of Tennessee Clinical Practice Guidelines for the Management of Chronic Pain and the FDA blueprint for risk evaluation and mitigation strategies related to long acting opioids.
  2. Appropriately assess patients for opioid treatment, including long-acting or extended release formulations.
  3. Apply best practices during initiation of therapy, dose modification, and discontinuation of opioids, including long-acting or extended release formulations.
  4. Appropriately counsel patients about their pain management regimens, including long-acting or extended release opioid formulations.
  5. Relate basic pharmacodynamics, pharmacokinetics, and toxicology of opioids to role in treatment, abuse potential, and laboratory test interpretation.
  6. Compare and contrast currently available long-acting and extended release opioid formulations, including review of selected product-specific drug information.
